COOPERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL: 2

The Dux varsity soccer team are still searching for their first win of their 2018 season, as they tied Coopersville 2-2 on Friday night. With the wind at their backs, the Dux put a tremendous amount of pressure on the Broncos, controlling both time of possession and the battles in the midfield. The Dux defensive back four were able to contain and frustrate a speedy and physical frontline for the Broncos, while the offense created multiple quality scoring opportunities in the opening half. "We controlled the tempo much of the first half, and were a little stronger, quicker and more decisive on the ball tonight compared to our last game. Our young players in the middle are starting to find the game a little bit, and our offense continues learning how to play, distribute and play with one another." The first half ended 0-0.

Coopersville took an early 1-0 lead on an early breakaway less than 2 minutes into the 2nd half. Despite conceding the first goal, the Dux continued to generate solid possession and movement through the midfield. The Dux knotted the score at 1-1 after Josie Bos intercepted a pass near midfield, and drove between 3 defenders before slotting a diagonal ball to Addi Potter on the right side. Potter was a step quicker to the ball than the onrushing Bronco keeper and was able to poke the ball up and into the back of the net from 15 yards out.

Coopersville regained the lead after a rare mistake by the Dux defense. A costly turnover resulted in a laser of a shot from the top right of the penalty box that sailed over the outstretched arms of Dux GK Ryleigh Farrell and into the upper far corner. The Dux did not fold and continued to press. The patience and hard work paid off with about 5 minutes remaining. Kylee Winn's  corner kick from the left side was not properly cleared by the Bronco defense. Sam Hecht got a head on the ball and redirected it back towards the goal. In the ensuing scramble for the ball in front of the net, Makenna Anderson was able to find the back of the net through traffic, knotting the score at 2-2.

Coopersville had a chance to win in the waning seconds, but Taylor Twork decisively came off her line and charged an onrushing Bronco player, forcing the shot just wid. "Both our GK played solid in net tonight. Defensively, we were able to move a couple of players in and out of the back line, as we continue to develop chemistry and trust. We did a better job of holding our line and keeping our shape in back, making it difficult for them to generate many scoring chances. Offensively, we had much better movement and intent tonight. We were more proactive than reactive, and continue moving forward and making progress. Very pleased with our effort, energy and resiliency tonight. Hopefully, we get some well deserved rest this weekend before tackling our 3rd game in 6 days on Monday." The Dux are 0-0-2 on the season.
